When planning a trip to Mexico, it’s natural to want clear and honest information about safety. The good news is that Bucerías and the Puerto Vallarta area remain very safe — and have continued to be one of Mexico’s most peaceful coastal destinations for decades.
A Peaceful Part of the Country
We understand that Mexico has a bad reputation for crime. One thing to keep in perspective is that our country is approximately the geographic size of Europe. There are regions that are indeed unsafe but that doesn’t make the entirety of the country unfit for travel.
Our region’s economy depends on tourism, so local authorities carefully patrol and maintain a safe environment for visitors. Bucerías and the greater Riviera Nayarit area welcome thousands of international travelers every week without incident, and none of our Villa Tayrona guests have ever experienced safety issues during their stay.
Safety and Privacy at Villa Tayrona
Villa Tayrona is located in a quiet residential neighborhood. The property is designed to feel like a private oasis — peaceful, secure, and completely your own.
The property includes a 6-meter perimeter wall, security camera system, and dedicated staff who help maintain and oversee the villa. Guests frequently mention in their reviews how serene and safe the environment feels.
Travel Advisories and Local Context
According to the Fall 2025 official U.S. Department of State Travel Advisories:
- State of Nayarit (where Bucerías is located): Level 2 — “Exercise Increased Caution,” with no specific warnings against travel.
- State of Jalisco (where the Puerto Vallarta airport is located): Level 3, but the cautions apply only to southern areas. The advisory states: “There are no restrictions on travel in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area, Puerto Vallarta (including neighboring Riviera Nayarit), Chapala, and Ajijic.”
In other words, travel to Bucerías, Puerto Vallarta, and the surrounding Riviera Nayarit region remains unrestricted.
Travel with Confidence
Like any destination, it’s always wise to take normal precautions, such as:
- Use formal airport taxis, prearranged transportation services or app-based transport.
- If walking around town at night, stay in well lit areas and with a group.
- Keep valuables in the villa’s safes and avoid displaying expensive items.
- Treat people with kindness and respect, and you can expect the same treatment in return.
Final Thoughts
It’s understandable if mobilizing a group of people to travel to a country with a bad reputation for crime feels daunting. As someone who grew up between the Swiss Alps and Small Town USA, my frame of reference for safety might be aligned with yours.
