About Bucerias

Situated on a beach that stretches many miles around the Banderas Bay coast, Bucerias is a vibrant, quickly changing yet peaceful place to be.  What used to be a fishing village is now a multicultural destination of its own right, with nearly 20,000 residents and many long-term visitors. The winter months are considered high season, but since COVID and the boom in travel, all months are now popular times to visit Bucerías.

There are clearly defined sections of the town: the tourist section, the residential areas, and a bustling "centro." Villa Tayrona is located here. We are in a residential neighborhood just a few blocks away from the Zona Dorada tourist area, a minute away from a cafe and bakery, laundromats, ATMs, shops and taco stands. It takes less than 10 minutes to walk to the beach.

Tours & Activities

  • Bucerías Beach - Many kilometers long and with open access, the beach is Bucerías's main attraction. Only 7 blocks from Villa Tayrona, it's less than a 10-minute walk and well worth it. For a serene experience, head to the beach in the early morning when the ocean is beautifully glassy and the atmosphere is quiet. In the afternoon, you'll enjoy seeing lots of beach vendors, fishermen and families. There are no strong tides here, meaning swimming is safe.

  • Human ConnectionsEngage ethically with local artisans on a tour that takes you into their homes and workshops. The experience ends with a traditional meal. Visit humanconnections.org/tours. Much of the art in Villa Tayrona was made by Human Connections artisans, as this is an organization near and dear to our hearts.

  • My Mexican Kitchen: Chefs Travis and Edgar host the best cooking classes in the area. Join them in their kitchen (walking distance from the villa!) to learn the secrets behind classic Mexican dishes, salsas and drinks.

  • Planeta Cacao: Located in Tondoroque, about 10 minutes south of Bucerías. Enjoy their hands-on chocolate workshops and interactive tours.

  • Bici Bucerías: Bike tours within and around Bucerías.

  • Markets: During high season there are a number of excellent markets in the area with food, music, and local vendors. The La Cruz Market runs every Sunday from November to May in the marina in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, just north of Bucerías and, with over 200 extraordinary vendors, is an absolutely worthwhile experience. The Forever Spring Farmer’s Market takes place on Wednesdays during high season in the La Comer parking lot. The Bucerías tianguis happens every Sunday, year-round, near the Arroyo del Indio, the river bed that runs through the center of town. Note that all of these markets take place early in the day, typically from 10am - 1pm (though some start earlier).

  • Golf: There are lots of options within 40 minutes, including (from least expensive to most) the Flamingos, Marina, El Tigre, Litibú, and Punta de Mita golf courses.

  • Surf: For surf lessons and trips, look into Wildmex, Mictlán Surf, Sayulita Surf School, Surf it Out, or Luna Azul. Surf spots include Sayulita, Burros, and El Anclote.

  • Hiking: Two great hiking trails in this area are the Monkey Mountain and Las Ánimas treks. For the former, it’s recommended to go with a guide (see AirBnB Experiences, Wildmex, or Mexitreks). You could do the Las Ánimas hike on your own.

  • Boating & Sailing: Depending on the type of sailing experience you’re interested in, consider: Ada Sailing (gourmet food), AllyCat (fun, family-run favorite), Mictlán Surf (smaller boats and affordable activities), Rock Star Sailor (private charters), and BIP Charters (variety of yachts). Consider a fishing or whale watching experience, or simply sail by the beautiful Islas Marietas or Los Arcos islands.

  • Birdwatching: Contact the local expert, Luis, founder of the San Pancho Birding Observatory (birdingsanpancho@gmail.com), for a truly special birding experience.

  • Zip-Lining & Horseback Riding - Rancho Mi Chaparrita in Sayulita, or Kali Ecopark in Puerto Vallarta, are our go-to recommendations for this one.

  • Food Tours: Vallarta Food Tours is an acclaimed, regional favorite. My Mexican Kitchen also offers food tours, done on foot right here in Bucerias.

  • Bucerías Centro: A simple but lovely cultural experience is to stroll through the Bucerías Centro Plaza around sunset. Particularly on Sundays, you will see crowds of locals enjoying the taco stands and other typical activities. We highly recommend the churro stand on the corner of the plaza closest to Villa Tayrona, which typically opens after 7:30pm.

  • Day Trips: Consider spending a day in one of our neighboring communities, such as San Pancho, Sayulita, Punta de Mita, La Cruz, or Puerto Vallarta.
